What is suitable for a U?
No discriminatory behaviour unless clearly disapproved of.
no references to illegal drugs or misuse unless for an educational or anti-drug purpose.







If a film is rated a certificate PG any child can go and see it!
Any child can watch a PG but parents are asked to consider whether the content is appropraite for their child.
What is suitable for a certificate PG?
Any discriminatory behaviour is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly disapproved of or used in a historical context.
Drugs will be unacceptable unless the film clearly follows an anti-drug message.
Frightening scenes must not be prolonged.
There must be no dangerous behaviour which young childen can copy.
Mild bad language only.
Natural nudity, no sexual content at all.
Sexual activity may be implied but should be discreet and infrequent.
Moderate violence without any detail is allowed as long as it is justified by the content.






If a film has a 12 certificate only people 12 and over can see it.
12 and 12A are the same criteria but 12A is  for the cinema and 12 is for DVD's. 12A means that if you are 12 you have to be accompanied by an adult, anyone older that 12 can go and see it freely.
What is suitable for a 12 certificate?
Discriminatory language and behaviour is acceptable as long as it is clearly condemned.
The use of drugs is allowed as long as it doesn't give great detail and instruction.
Physical and phsycological threat may be allowed as long as disturbing sequences are not frequent.
Dangerous behaviour must not dwell on detail, so it can't be copied.
Moderate language is allowed as long as it is not frequent.
Sexual activity may be discreetly portrayed, frequent sexual references are unlikely to be acceptable.
Violence is acceptable as long as it does not dwell on detail.








If a film is certificate 15 it means that people 15 and over can see it!
What is suitable for a 15 certificate?
There musn't be any discriminitive language or behaviour.
Taking drugs is acceptable as long as the film does not promote the use of drugs. Any drugs that are easily accesible (solvents, aerosols etc) and are misused is not acceptable.
A strong threat is permitted as long as it is not sexualised or sadistic.
Imitable behaviour is allowed as ling as it doesn't dwell on detail, so it can't be copied.
Strong language is permitted (fuck) but the strongest terms (cunt) can only be used if it is justified by the content. Continueous use of the strongest terms is unacceptable.
Nudity is allowed in a sexual content as long as there is no detail.
Sexual activity is allowed as long as no strong detail is revealed. There may be strong verbal references to sex but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable.
No themes are prohibited as long as the theme is acceptable for a 15 year old.
Strong violence is acceptable as long as it doesn't dwell on the pain and injury. Strong gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Sadistic or sexualised violence will be unacceptable. References to sexual violence is allowed but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and justified.


If a film is certificate 18 people 18 and ove can go and see it!

Strong Violence
Strong drug use
